The Stress Response & Therapeutic Yoga
The Stress Response
Stress is kinetic and it's meant to mobilize us from a threat. This was especially useful when we were hunter-gatherers and needed to run from a bear. Now not so much. When our nervous system is disregulated, our "Fight or Flight" response becomes overly active, sounding alarms over a work email or someone's tone. To return back to safety and balance, movement is necessary to complete the stress response. What happens when we don’t actually run from the perceived bear? Stress hormones become stuck and we begin to see the effects. This is where we develop mental health disorders, autoimmune diseases, digestive issues, insomnia, and physical ailments or disease from chronic stress. 1:1 sessions are the next step to learning how to navigate all of this.
What to Expect in Therapeutic Yoga
Therapeutic Yoga is unique in that it's a whole body approach. It combines ancient yogic traditions like movement, yoga postures, breathwork, and meditation, with the knowledge of Western medicine, psychology, and neuroscience. Humans are not a One Size Fits All, so the answer can't be a One Size Fits all.
While group classes are great for community, movement, and co-regulation, therapeutic yoga is a deeper, one-on-one supportive practice to tend to specific physical or emotional needs. Before sessions start, you'll first complete a comprehensive Intake process where you share your areas of focus, health and history, lifestyle, and goals. We'll meet via Zoom to discuss, and in each session thereafter I provide practices tailored to you, in a supportive and educational space. No prior experience with yoga is needed. Together we explore what’s happening in your body, move through stress responses, regulate your nervous system, and build resilience. We practice these techniques together in a series of sessions, adjusting or deepening as needed. Just as importantly, you’ll also practice on your own with the tools I’ve given you until we meet next time. You'll be prepared to take these tools with you for life.
* Therapeutic yoga sessions are informed by yoga therapy principles and trauma-informed training and are not a substitute for medical or mental health care. They can be a wonderful supportive complement alongside work with your doctors and therapists.
